What are Astrology Modalities?

Modality in astrology is a way to group the 12 zodiac signs into groupings of three categories (otherwise known as quadruplicities).

Modalities are based on the earth’s seasonal phases and the sun’s path along the ecliptic.

Why Are Modalities Important?

Modalities speak to a sign’s “basic mode of action”. Understanding modalities helps you to

What’s cool about them is that they speak to a sign’s “basic mode of action”.

And it’s incredibly useful as a business owner to narrow down your zone of genius.

Modalities help you understand the nature of your placements, and recognize the unique strengths that you have (rather than falling into comparison that you’re not designed like someone else).

3 Types of Modalities

There are 3 types of modalities that an astrology sign can fall into. Here are the differences between them:

Cardinal

The first modality is Cardinal. These are the signs that begin a season: Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn.

Cardinal signs tend to be more active, initiate, spearhead, or begin new ventures, innovative, and trendsetting.

Cardinal signs are great at exhibiting traditional leadership qualities.

They’re temperament is great for going first, leading from the front.

Fixed

The second modality is Fixed. These are the signs that stabilize a season: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius.

Fixed signs have the stamina to maintain what currently exists.

They also have a tendency to be more stubborn, immovable, committed & patient to what is established, and reliable.

They’re great at leading people through a process, framework, including all the challenges and stumbling blocks

Mutable

The third and final modality is Mutable. These are the signs that transition a season: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces.

Mutable signs have the flexibility to be adaptive & changeable.

All of the mutable signs are considered “double-bodied” since they hold space for two seasons at once (even referred to as “bicorporeal” in a lot of traditional texts).

The strengths of the mutable signs come from their tendency to be versatile, multifaceted, and a “Jack of all trades”.

They thrive on being adaptable and tend to have a desire for variety.
