The foundation of astrology is built on astrology signs.

My first introduction to astrology was my grandmother’s astrology books on love and sun signs. Later, I poured over the horoscope section of the newspaper to try and better understand the signs for myself.

Without the signs, astrology would be nothing.

If you want to learn the foundations of astrology, the signs are the best place to start.

What are the Astrology Signs?

There are 12 zodiac signs that makeup what we refer to as the “signs” in astrology. These signs are based on the constellations for which they are named.

The Astrology Signs

These are the 12 astrology signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.

Each sign has a symbol that represents it, but knowing them comes down to understanding their archetypes.

Knowing the astrology signs comes down to understanding their archetypes. First, there’s the literal symbol that represents each zodiac sign:

  • Aries: the Ram
  • Taurus: the Bull
  • Gemini: the Twins
  • Cancer: the Crab
  • Leo: the Lion
  • Virgo: the Maiden
  • Libra: the Scales
  • Scorpio: the Scorpian
  • Sagittarius: the Archer
  • Capricorn: the Goat
  • Aquarius: the Water Bearer
  • Pisces: the Two Fishes

Beyond that, understanding the signs comes down to knowing the archetypes.

If you want to dive deeper into getting to know the signs, you can understand their archetypes based on other characterizations:

Elements

Each of the astrology signs can also be divided by elements.

Think of it this way: if the signs are the actors, the elements are the dialogue. It’s the way that the signs express and communicate how they want to be perceived.

There are four elements that the 12 astrology signs can be divided into:

Earth is the element of stability, ruling over Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn.

Air is the element of intellect and fluidity, ruling over Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.

Fire is the element of passion, ruling over Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.

Water is the element of fluidity, ruling over Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.

Modality

Along with the four elements, there are three modalities that the astrology signs can be divided into.

A sign’s modality can show how it’s meant to lead – essential if you want to bring astrology into your business strategy.

The modalities are as follows:

Cardinal is the modality of self-starting. This is the modality that represents the energy of initiation and beginnings. The strength of the Cardinal placements is to begin – to bring an idea from conception into reality.

The Cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn.

Fixed is the modality of stability.

The Fixed Modality is here to lead through commitment. They are here to guide through dedication – once they have decided on something, they remain steadfast to it to see it through to the end.

The Fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius.

Mutable is the modality of fluidity.

The Mutable modality is here to guide others to remain flexible. They teach us that change may be everpresent, but it is our ability to adapt and shift as we need to that will lead to survival and success.

The Mutable signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces.

We all have a combination of all three modalities in our chart. But you may find that you are dominant in one modality over the others. This can indicate how to lead in your business.

Which Signs Hold the Most Importance?

Even though the zodiac signs have a specific order they fall in, there’s no hierarchy of “better” signs than others.

However, for your individual natal chart, there are certain signs that will be more significant to you because of their placements.

The three most important placements in your chart are the Sun, Moon, and Rising signs.

Sun Sign

Your Sun Sign is the sign that the Sun was in at the moment of your birth.

This is generally the first sign that we are introduced to, considering that the Sun only changes signs about every 30 days.

The Sun represents your purpose. It’s what you are drawn to what motivates you, and what you are passionate about. It is the light that shapes how you see the world, especially if you are a Leo Rising, as it’s your Chart Ruler.

Moon Sign

While the Sun reflects our public desires, your Moon Sign highlights your private self.

The Moon is the fastest moving planet in our solar system, changing signs every 2-3 days. It represents your emotional well-being, your intuition, emotions, and physical life. It’s what you desire emotionally to be fulfilled.

Your Ascendant

Your Ascendant (or Rising) Sign is the zodiac sign that was approaching the horizon at the time of your birth. Your Ascendant holds massive importance in your astrology chart because it dictates the order of your natal chart.

Your Ascendant shapes your body and appearance, but also the place where your soul meets your body within Hellenistic astrology.

To know your Ascendant sign, you have to know the exact time of your birth as the Ascendant changes multiple times in a day.

Learning the astrology signs won’t happen overnight. But it is a skill that is worth learning as a business owner who is ready to bring astrology into your business strategy.
